In this woodblock Kunichika renders his interpretation of Chapter 34 titled Wakana I, from the Tale of Genji.

The seated woman is writing a card with another holding a lantern under a chery tree in blossom.

In Chapter 34 titled Wakana I, (New Herbs: Part one) in Tale of Genji;

It is the year of Genji’s fortieth birthday, “to which the court could not be indifferent and which had long promised to send gladness ringing through the land”. To honor him, Tamakzura arrives at Rokujo bearing a gift of new herbs that promise long life.

Biography:

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900)

Kunichika was a leading Japanese woodblock print artist and highly influential.

Talented as a child, at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo’s then leading print maker Utagawa Kunisada. He produced numerous wood blocks of popular and famous Kabuki plays and actors of which he was very knowledgeable of.  of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. Kunichika also made many bijinga (beautiful women) woodblocks.
