Description:
Early C19th Mercator world map, from Guthrie’s Geography.
Australia shown with an imaginary southern coast from the Great Australian Bight to Bass Strait, here named Bassess Strait which was the naming used by the great British mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith on the first edition of his chart showing the strait between the mainland and Van Diemen’s Land. Arrowsmith corrected the naming error in subsequent issues.
From Guthrie’s Geography.
William Guthrie (1808 - 1770)
Guthrie was born in Brechin in Scotland. He wrote a number of histories and translated Cicero and is best known for, Guthrie’s Geography. This geography became one of the most important and widely read geography texts before and after the Revolution.
