Description:
Friedrich Wilhelm Freit’s map of the western Pacific using Djurberg’s name Ulimaroa for Australia. Djurberg published the
first Swedish map showing Cook’s first voyage discoveries in Australia and the
Pacific in 1780 (Tooley 446. p.58). His use of the name propagated continued
use by various mapmakers into the 19th century. He had based his application of
the name on Cook’s account of his time in New Zealand.

Polynesiens.
Detailed map of Australia and the Pacific. Australia depicts the recent
charting of the southern coast and the discovery of the Bass Strait. A feature
of this map is the interesting historical naming. The western half of the
mainland is named Neu Holland and below this is the name, Ulimaroa. The historical discoveries on the western and northern coasts
reflect the Dutch role, up to the discoveries made by Tasman on his second
voyage in 1643-1644 including those made on the western side of Cape York
Peninsula from 1606 to 1643-1644. The southern coast shows the recent
discoveries made by Baudin, in the ships the Naturalist and Geographe in 1802-1803. The eastern half of Australia is shown with the
discoveries of James Cook in the Endeavour in 1769-1770.
