Depicts Chodensu (also known as Muso Kokushi), the famous 13th century ink painter and Zen priest sternly looking at his disciple Kikuchi Myōtaku painting a picture of the deity Fudo My0-0. Initially opposed to Kikuchi Myōoaku’s painting, he relented when he realized Myotaku’s talent.

Biography:
Inoue Yasuji (1864-1889)
Also known as Inoue Tankei and Inoue Yasujiro.
Received the art name Tankei from the publisher Matsuki in 1884. Yasuji was a student of Kiyochika Kobayashi. Although extremely talented he tragically died at the age of twenty five.
Little other biographical information exists on him.
