The island was discovered by Captain James Cook, in the ships Resolution and Discovery, December 24, 1777. Cook stayed until the 2nd of January, in order to refresh the men obtain coconuts, fish and turtles and observe an eclipse of the sun. Cook said: “As we kept our Christmas here, I called this discovery Christmas Island.“
Thomas Bowen (1733 - 1790)
Mapmaker and print seller, son of Emanuel Bowen in Wales. Apprenticed to his father 1748. In partnership with Richard Reynolds in 1761 when they were prisoners in the King's Bench, required to make a schedule of their estate and effects as insolvent debtors. He produced numerous maps and atlases. He died in 1790 in reduced circumstances.
