Description:
Rare engraving of the second Cleveland Street Public School, at 244 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills.
The Council of Education officially stated that it had decided to erect a new school at Cleveland Street, due to the dilapidated condition of the old school and the unsuitability of the material from which it was built as well as the need for more space for pupils and on 14 September 1867, George Mansfield, the architect, recommended acceptance of Kelly and McLeod’s tender of £3747 for mason and brickwork and Slade’s of £2650 for carpenter’s work.
