Description:
1824 FINEST VIEWS OF BURMA INDIA BY DANIELL
From the very rare large folio series of only ten views titled, “Views in the Burman Empire”, drawn on the spot by Captain J.Kershaw, of the 13th Light Infantry and engraved by William Daniell R.A. “It was Daniell’s practice to only sign the engraved plates of other artists only if that artist was a personal friend.” Abbey 406
The British conquest of Burma began in 1824 in response to a Burmese attempt to invade India. After two further wars, Britain had incorporated the entire country into the British Raj. Burma was administered as a province of British India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony. Legend has it that the Shwedagon Pagoda is 2,500 years old, but archaeologists estimate it was first built by the Mon sometime between the 6th and 10th centuries. After the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1824, British troops occupied the Schwedagon Pagoda complex, which stands high over the city like a castle. References TIA II 406 Fig 28.
