Description:

This fine and rare engraving is from the Dutch bible published by Pieter Mortier titled, HISTORIE DES OUDEN EN NIEUWEN TESTAMENTS, Verrykt Met Meer Dan Vierhonderd Printverbeeldingen in Koper Gesneden. Met Privilegie Van de Heeren Staaten Van Holland En Westfriesland. The engravings are by or after Luycken (Luyken), Elgier, Picart, Goeree, and others. Not a full Bible in the usual sense, Mortier presents the books of the Bible through his illustrations, each accompanied by a short telling of the story in standard prose. The fine, large engravings were produced by or from the works of several masters. Many were later reproduced and used again in later and lesser bibles, in most case significantly reduced. Pieter Mortier (1661&#82111711) was an 18th century mapmaker, engraver and publishers from the Northern Netherlands. He had traveled to Paris in 1681-1685 and won the privilege in 1690 of publishing maps and atlases by French publishers in Amsterdam. He used this privilege to win a similar set of privileges for printing his famous &quotillustrated print bible&quot in 1700.
