Description:

Duncan McIntyre was an Australian explorer who followed in the tracks of Burke and Wills. In 1864 he laid claim to the property now called Dalgonally in north-west Queensland, and found evidence of Ludwig Leichhardt’s final expedition.

McIntyre convinced the President of the Royal Society of Victoria, Ferdinand von Mueller to finance a search expedition for Leichhardt. Von Mueller organised a committee of Melbourne ladies who raised 1,500 pounds for the ‘Ladies Leichhardt Search Expedition‘. Duncan McIntyre led the expedition taking seven camels with him (although Giles ‘Australia Twice Traversed says 16). The party also included two sepoy camel handlers, Belooch Khan and Esau Khan.

He subsequently led a party in search of Leichhardt, but died of fever during the search.

In 1867 he again set up commercially as a wood-engraver, at 87 Little Collins Street East, close to William’s printery in the same street. He returned to England in 1888.
