Description:

Rare discourse by Richard Henry Major (1818-1891) of the discovery of Australia by the Portuguese. Soft bound brown wrapper, 24 pp, with the facsimile map of northern Australia from a manuscript chart in the British Library. Title on the front cover differs to that on the titles page as usual; Prioridade do Descobrimento da Australia pelos Portuguezes. Major’s publication which was based on his research from the British Library’s rich collection of rare Dieppe maps, manuscripts and journals in the Hakluyt Society created ongoing interest in the subject. He was fluent in Spanish which facilitated his research.
