Description:
C1620 Tomaso Porcacchi (1530-1585) Miniature world map on an oval projection by Tomaso Porcacchi and engraved by the Paduan Girolamo Porro from L’Isole Piu Famose del Mondo. This finely executed world map was based on Camocio’s wall map (1567), which was influenced by Gastaldi’s prototype (1546). In contrast to earlier maps which showed the continents of Asia and America as a conjoined landmass, this map depicts a narrow strait between America and Asia. The mythical land of Terra Australis Incognita, which was believed to exist to keep the earth in balance, dominates the Southern Hemisphere. On a full sheet with letterpress text in Italian. Shirley no.127, pl. 108, p.151.
Girolamo Porro (1530 - 1585)
Poro was an Italian engraver born at Padua and spent most of his working career in Venice.
