GARDEN PALACE – A rare engraving from the original edition of the Illustrated Sydney News. This is the best contemporary account of the buildings destruction. The Garden Palace designed by James Barnet, built in only eighteen months from iron and timber with the use of electric lights to allow three shifts to work per day. It was a great success with over 1,022,000 visitors through it’s gates. On 22 September 1882 the building was totally destroyed in a six hour fire. 1. Powerless. 2. The Watchman rescuing his dog. 3. ‘Tis an ill wind that blows nobody good. 4. -Rescuing horses from the Governor’s Stables. 5. -A fiery shower.
