GARDEN PALACE – SET OF 8 rare engravings from the original edition of the Illustrated Sydney News. This is the best contemporary account of the buildings destruction. The Garden Palace designed by James Barnet, built in only eighteen months from iron and timber with the use of electric lights to allow three shifts to work per day. It was a great success with over 1,022,000 visitors through it’s gates. Titles of the prints On 22 September 1882 the building was totally destroyed in a six hour fire. 1. Destruction of the Garden Palace-Start of the fire, as seen by the watchmen. 2. Destruction of the Garden Palace-"To the rescue". 3. The Garden Palace-"Under the Dome"-Where the fire is supposed to have commenced. 4. The Garden Palace-The Ruins after the fire. 5. The Garden Palace, Sydney, Destroyed by fire, September 22, 1882. 6.
