This lithograph is one a series made at the time of colonial expansion in the Pacific and reflected German interests in the area. The view is probably taken from the Holterman tower looking south east.

Biography:

Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865–1926)

German painter, author and illustrator, who specialized in natural history images. Kuhnert studied at the Royal Academic College of Fine Arts from 1883 to 1887, thereafter travelling regularly to Scandinavia, Egypt, East Africa and India to draw and paint. Kuhnert is considered one of the most important German animal painters of his time and his favorite motif was the African lion.
