Description:

C.19th engraving of Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) who was also known as Guido Fawkes.

Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who was involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Fawkes converted to Catholicism and left for mainland Europe, where he fought for Catholic Spain in the Eighty Years’ War against Protestant Dutch reformers in the Low Countries.

The failure of which has been commemorated as Guy Fawkes Night since 5 November 1605, when his effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by fireworks.

John Leech (1817 - 1864)

Leech was a cartoonist and caricaturist educated at Charterhouse and then studied medicine but turned to art. From 1841 he contributed hundreds of sketches of middle-class life and political cartoons to Punch, as well as the Illustrated London News (1856). Over the next twenty-three years Punch Magazine published 3,000 of Leech's drawings and 600 cartoons.
