Description:

Schenk&#8217s striking world map is based on Carel Allard&#8217s design and first appeared in his Atlas Minor of 1696. The traditional decorative border of many seventeenth-century world maps has disappeared and the two hemispheres are surrounded by eight smaller projections depicting the world from various angles and four smaller circular diagrams. The dark cross-hatched background provides a further striking contrast. The only changes made by Schenk are the addition of two groups of beautifully engraved cupids between the hemispheres. An excellent example of the superior level that Dutch mapmaking had reached amidst intense rivalry between mapmakers and during the VOC&#8217s greatest era of prosperity. Australia and New Zealand are shown with the discoveries of Tasman&#8217s first and second voyages 1642-44. Other Dutch discoveries include: Hartog 1616, Houtman 1619, van Leeuwin 1622, Cartensz and van Coolsteerdt in the Pera and Arnhem 1623, and those of Nuyts 1627. California is shown as an island. From Atlas contractus, sive, Mapparum geographicarum Sansoniarum auctarum et correctarum. Nova congeries. References: Shirley 578, ill.pl 398.
