An early engraving of the Platypus based on Frederick Nodder’s which been published in 1799. The first engraved image of a Platypus and the first description was made from the first Platypus sighted and captured November 1797 on the Hawkesbury River by David Collins. When the first skin sent by John Hunter, reached Europe it was thought to be a hoax.

Biography:
Moses Griffith (1747-1819)
Water-colour painter with no formal training but in 1769 he was engaged by Thomas Pennant who in discovering his aptitude as a draughtsman employed him to illustrate his tours. He then provided a number of illustrations for Pennant’s, Genera of Birds.
