An early c.19th engraving of the Platypus based on an earlier image made by Frederick Nodder, published in 1799.
The first engraved image of a Platypus and the first description, was made from the first Platypus sighted and captured November 1797 on the Hawkesbury River by David Collins. When the first skin sent by John Hunter, reached Europe it was thought to be a hoax.

Frederick Polydore Nodder (1751 - 1800)
Nodder was an English natural history artist of plants, animals and fauna. He was botanical artist to Queen Charlotte and also worked for Joseph Banks on the monumental publication of the botanical specimens collected on James Cook's first voyage. Known as Banks' Florilegium, it was never printed during Bank's lifetime.
