Description:

Colonial engraving based on the lithograph by the French artist, Louis Auguste de Sainson (1800-1887) on Dumont D’Urville’s voyage of exploration in the Astrolabe which visited Sydney. The purpose of the voyage was to find opportunities for French whalers and to locate a suitable place to establish a penal colony. The ship arrived in Sydney on 17 January 1824 and stayed for two months. The officers keenly observed the progress of the convict settlement during their stay. The view is in Sydney Harbour looking eastwards to the Heads.
