Description:
Scarce colonial engraving of Epsom racecourse.
The Epsom racecourse at Mordialloc began its racing program in June 1889, the year Richfield closed. Owner James Smith Jenkins, a successful land speculator, built Epsom at the corner of White Street and Boundary Road, using renowned architect Philip E. Treeby to design the grandstand with seating for about 3000 people. The picturesque course boasted a clock tower, fountains and lawns, with views to Port Phillip and the Dandenongs and rooms for the jockeys, stewards and committee members.
