Description:
Rare map of Sydney as it was from Louis Claude Freycinet’s, “Voyage autour du monde”. On board the Uranie Freycinet sailed to Australia, southeast east Indies and the Pacific in 1817-20, the resulting views and maps are some of the finest engraved Australian colonial period views ever printed. This map is dated on the plate as 1803 and although there is no mapmaker on the map it was probably taken from the plan originally done by Charles Lessuer the artist on board the ill fated Baudin exhibition. Lesueur visited Sydney in 1803 and in the resulting account by Peron a map of Sydney by to Lesueur was included. The map has now been updated to include the names of the extended street plan which were not marked in Lesueurs original plan and remains the same now. Cockle Bay, Sydney Cove, Farm Cove and Palmer Cove (Woolloomooloo Bay). Interestingly below the name Hyde Park is the following in French – "terrein our la course des chevaux". (Racecourse).
