Description:

Rare etching of Kookaburras by this Australian etcher, numbered 17 of 50 and signed in pencil lower right. Represented, NGA & AGNSW.

Biography:

Early 20th century painter and illustrator and the younger brother of
the painter Henry J. Crisp. James Crisp lived alternatively in Sydney
and California for a number of years and exhibited both with the Royal
Art Society in Sydney and the Printmakers’ Society of California. He studied art with J.S. Watkins
and Harry Garlick and exhibited with the Royal Art Society from 1901
(in 1902 as J. A. Crips [ sic ]), as well as in the USA where he lived
from time to time. He contributed illustrations to USA journals such as
Sunset
, Wasp and to the Bulletin in Sydney, notably illustrating
Henry Lawson’s short stories for the latter. With “Pasquin”. In 1926-37 he exhibited
with the Printmakers’ Society of California. He was also a member of the
Australian Painter-Etchers Society and had work in the 1924 Wembley
international exhibition. Crisp died in Sydney in 1962.
