Omai (more correctly Mae or Mai), was the young Raiatean (Society Islands) taken on theAdventureto England. He was the embodiment of the concept of the ‘noble savage’ put forward by the influential French philosopher Rousseau. Omai was instrumental during Cook’s second and final voyages in being able to communicate with the natives of the Polynesian islands visited by cook. Omai’s return was also one of the specific tasks contained in the Admiralty’s instructions for Cook’s third voyage.
