Description:

Very rare map of Australia with numerous place names and ‘tColony of New South Wales’ and ‘Settt. of Swan River’ both highlighted in colour. A number of place names in Swan River are recorded, including Dale River 1829, York 1832, Mount Caroline, Beverly 1829, Colley River (Collie) 1829, Blackwood River 1827, Augusta 1830, Lake Katharina.

Issued in the fourth edition of, Hints on emigration to the new settlement on the Swan and Canning Rivers on the west coast of Australia. The earlier editions do not contain this map.

The Canning River was named in 1827 when Captain James Stirling aboard the HMS Success following an examination of the region in March 1827 named the river after George Canning, an eminent British statesman who was Prime Minister of Great Britain at the time and whose government facilitated the funds for the expedition. In November 1829, just five months after the founding of the Swan River Colony in Western Australia, an exploring party led by now Governor James Stirling chose a site for a new town named Kelmscott on the banks of the Canning River.
