Description:

Impressive panoramic view of Algiers which shows the rampart and parapet built by the French in the foreground, which replaced the original Ottoman stone wall. Under French rule, the city underwent continuous cultural and architectural modification. The French intended to make the city a modern political capital and invested heavily in modernising and extending the city, tearing down old buildings and replacing them with buildings designed by some of the best contemporary French architects.
