Great photograph showing trams heading down King Street at the intersection of George Street.

The Belfield’s Hotel – Royal Exchange Hotel can be seen on the right and Frank Howes & Co. Tailors is located adjacent to the Hotel. W.T Waters & Co., Drapers and Mercers can be seen on the left on ‘Block Corner’. The ‘King St.’ tram can be seen in the centre of the image.

Biography:

John Payne (1834-1915)

John Payne worked as a photographer around Tamworth NSW between 1869-74, then in 1875 he established a studio at Waterloo, Sydney advertising views of the city and the Blue Mountains for sale. In 1879 he won a medal at the Exhibition in Sydney. In 1884 he travelled with the Government photographer to New Guinea to record the establishment of the British protectorate, these photos were never published.
