Description:
Meiji Period
In woodblock printing the artist, publisher, woodcutter and printer collaborated in the making of a print. Ultimately only the artists signature and the publishers seal were placed on the woodblock. A colour woodblock requires a seperate block for virtually every colour. A simple subject by Japanese standards would usually use up to nine different blocks. A key block would be cut first, giving the outline of the image drawn by the artist.
