Description:
Early c.17th map of ancient Germany by Abraham Ortelius, published in, Ortelius’s, Parergon. Ortelius used cartographic sources from ancient authors such as; Tacitus, Cæsar, Dionysus, Ptolemæus, Suetonius, Eutropius, Seneca, Plinius and Strabo.
This atlas of ancient geography must be regarded as a personal work of Ortelius. For this work he did not, as in the ‘Theatrum’, copy other people’s maps but drew the originals himself which were later engraved by Jan Wierix … The maps in the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century. Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598)
Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer, map seller and publisher. Ortelius was a leading cartographer who published the first modern atlas in 1570, Theatrum orbis terrarum in which each map was presented on a separate sheet. He initially trained as an engraver in 1547 and as an illuminator of maps. Influenced by Gerard Mercator he published his first map in 1564 and soon after published his famous atlas that changed the way maps were sold and published.
