Rare engraving of the scene of John Gilbert (1842-1865) death. Gilbert was a member of the Gardiner–Hall gang of bushrangers in New South Wales. He was shot dead by the police at the age of 23 near Binalong, New South Wales on 13 May 1865. At the time of his death he had become Australia’s worst criminal, being involved in more than 630 hold-ups.

Samuel Calvert (1828 - 1913)
Samuel Calvert (1828-1913) English painter and engraver who moved to Adelaide after his older brothers John and William migrated to South Australia in 1843. By 1850 Calvert had set up on his own account in King William Street then then moved to Melbourne as an engraver in 1853. He was a prolific and left a large body of work.
