Artist:

James Sowerby (1757-1822)

Sowerby was born in London and became a painter of flowers for William Curtis, whose Flora Londinensis he illustrated. Sowerby studied art at the Royal Academy and took an apprenticeship with Richard Wright. James was one of the Sowerby family of naturalists.

In 1790, he began the first of several huge projects, one being the botany of England that was to take over 24 years.
