A complete collection of c.18th engraved portraits, of the first twenty eight Governors of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), Batavia. There are twenty seven portraits as Jan Pieterszoon Coen was twice Governor in 1619–1623 and 1627–1629.

1 Pieter Both 1610–1614 First Governor-General of the East Indies, after relinquishing his position he drowned on his way back to the Netherlands.
2 Gerard Reynst 1614–1615 Died from dysentery
3 Laurens Reael 1615–1619 Reael resigned following a dispute with the VOC’s leadership.
4 Jan Pieterszoon Coen 1619–1623 Returned to the Netherlands in 1623, but was reappointed a few years later. He died in 1629.
5 Pieter de Carpentier 1623–1627 Left after being named head of the VOC. The Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia is named after him.

Jakob van der Schley (1715 - 1779)

Schley was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart (1673-1733). His greatest work was the numerous engraved portraits, views and maps for most of the engraved plates in the Prevost's, Abbe., "Histoire générale des voyages".
