Description:

Rare, early portrait of the famous race horse, Haphazard.

Haphazard.br c 1797 (Sir Peter Teazle – Miss Hervey, by Eclipse). Sire Line Highflyer. Family 35.

Bred by Mr Legh of High Legh, he was purchased by William Henry Vane (1766-1842), 3rd Earl of Darlington, prior to his career on the turf. Lord Darlington bred the St Leger winner Chorister (b c 1828 Lottery). Most of Family 35 descends from Haphazard’s unnamed full sister (b f 1798).

“The Druid” described him as a “gay, nag-looking horse, with a low back and very fine action, but never a great favourite. Billy Pierse thought he had hardly ever been on a truer four-mile horse than him and Agonistes, both of the same age, both by Sir Peter, and companions in the Raby stable”.

During six years of racing he won more than fifteen races. His best race was said to be the Great Subscription Purse at the York August meeting in 1803 in which he defeated Marcia (gr f 1797 Coriander) by a half a length. In the stud he got several classics winners, including two Two Thousand Guineas winners, Antar (b c 1816) and Reginald (b c 1818), the St Leger winner Filho da Puta (br c 1812) and the One Thousand Guineas winner Rowena (ch f 1817).

Haphazard died in April of 1821.
