Description:
Very rare, and important early map of Newcastle by Henry Taylor Plews with locations of coal pits, proposed extension of the Great Northern Railway line along port.
Shown is the Australian Agricultural Company’s railway line from its D and F pits. The company had been granted 2,000 acres of land by the British Government to pursue coal mining anywhere in New South Wales. After unsuccessfully searching for suitable land near Sydney it selected land on the western boundary of the township of Newcastle.
