Description:

First edition of this large detailed c.18th map of the southern hemisphere by Guillaume de L’Isle (1675-1726) published by Jean-Claude Dezauche  (1745?-1824).

This chart went through a number of editions, each being updated with recent discoveries and with changes to text information. This first edition differs from the later editions by the absence of any text panels, rectangular borders or the addition at lower right of Cape Circoncision. De L’Isle shows two locations for the Solomon Islands , one according to ‘Fernand Gallego‘, north-east of New Zealand, the other according to Dudley, placed further towards South America. Australia and New Zealand are shown according to the discoveries made on Cook’s first voyage. The early Dutch discoveries and names are shown in northern and western coasts of Australia. The tracks of numerous explorers are marked and include; Magellan 1520, Mendana 1568 & 1595, Tasman 1641-2, Le Maire & Schouten 1616, Dampier 1700, Halley 1700 etc.

Guillaume de L'Isle (1675 - 1726)

L'Isle was the leading French cartographer of the C18th and renowned for the accuracy of his maps. He studied under Jean Cassini and from an early age showed his talent. At the age of 27 Delisle was admitted to the Academie Royale des Sciences and by 1718 he had been made the Royal Geographer. His maps reflect his scientific approach to map making by including the most up to date cartographic information as well as the use of new astronomical information. Where he was unable to verify information conclusively, he would note the fact on his maps.
