Hobart Town, From the New Wharf

Rare separately issued view of Hobart depicting the active port that it had become fifty years after British settlement. Charles Darwin had visited Hobart Town in February 1836 as part of the Beagle expedition and wrote that ‘I was chiefly struck with the comparative fewness of the large houses, either built or building.’ Hobart quickly became a major port, due to its fine harbour on the Derwent River and flourishing whaling, sealing and shipbuilding trades. Lloyd Grant was the son of Lieutenant Henry Lloyd of the 36th Regiment, Bengal Native Infantry, who arrived in Tasmania in 1842. After serving a final two years in India, Captain Lloyd retired in 1844 to a property at New Norfolk which he named Bryn Estyn. Henry junior studied divinity at Christ’s College, Bishopsbourne but he was refused ordination by one F.R.Nixon. He then studied painting under John Skinner Prout and Conrad Martens. Having a private income meant that he had no need to sell his work and could devote his time to travelling and sketching as he pleased.
