Description:

Large scale map of some islands in Vanuatu and Three King Islands and the northern tip of the north island of New Zealand showing the tracks of the French ships Recherche and Esperance in March and April 1793. 

D’Entrecasteaux under Huon de Kermadec, sailed in 1791 sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, along the southern Australia coast from Cape Leeuwin easterly, and then into the Pacific. With orders not only to search for La Perouse but to also make scientific discoveries and to chart the coasts. They were instructed to check the accuracy of the existing earlier Dutch and charts of the South Indian and South Pacific Oceans. The hydrographer on the expedition was Beautemps-Beaupre.

Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré (1766-1854) 

Beautemps-Beaupre was a French hydrographer, hydrographic engineer and cartographer.

He
accompanied the D’Entrecasteaux expedition in search of La Pérouse in
1791, and made a valuable contribution of to the charting of the
Pacific. Subsequently he was employed in all of the important
hydrographic labours undertaken during the First French Empire and the
Bourbon Restoration. He was elected a member of the Académie des
sciences in 1810 and was appointed chief hydrographer and keeper of the
Dépôt de la Marine (predecessor of the Naval Hydrographic and
Oceanographic Service) in 1814.
