Description:

Portraits of Kraimokou, the king prime minister Young, Tameameha, the king’s favourite and Keihe, Koukoui, Jack, the royal pilot. Freycinet sighted Hawaii on 5 August 1819 and dropped anchor in Kealakekua Bay three days later. Kamehameha I, the first king of a unified Hawaii had just died and according to Hawaiian custom, his palace was burned to ashes and pigs were slaughtered for the funeral. As a result, Freycinet was initially unable to supply his ships with provisions. During the one month stay, the artists were able to provide a unique record of island life prior to European settlement.

These engraved images are amongst the finest prints ever made during the period of the great voyages of exploration.

Biography:

J. Alphonse Pellion (1796-1868)

Pellion was a topographical painter, naval draughtsman and midshipman aboard l’Uranieunder the command of Louis de Freycinet during the voyages of 1817-1820. Pellion made many sketches in NSW, including views of Cox’s Pass and Cox’s River and portraits of the local aborigines. In 1819, Governor of New South Wales Lachlan Macquarie invited French explorer Baudin to cross the Blue Mountains on a new road, and Pellion accompanied him.
