Early image of the Great Hall at Sydney Grammar School which was the original building originally that housed Sydney University. Sydney Grammar School subsequently acquired the land and building in College Street which had been temporarily occupied by the newly founded University of Sydney in 1852.
‘The opening of the University in the capital of New South Wales is an event greatly significant of the progress of the social and intellectual growth of the colony. Accordingly, the ceremony, which took place on the 11th October last, in the great Hall, College-buildings, Hyde Park, was attended by a very numerous audience.…’
