Description:

Early miniature map, extending from the east coast of Africa to the Americas. The map illustrates the route of Magellan who circumnavigated the world for the first time in 1519-22, via the straits that now bear his name. Magellan died before reaching the Spices Islands and the voyage was completed by the Basque navigator Juan Sebastin de Elcano (del Cano). The elaborate title cartouche, is of a large tent depicting Magellan meeting with natives of the River Plata.

Australia is shown according to Tasman’s voyages of 1642-1644 and is named Hollandia Nova
