Description:

Famous c.16th map of Italy by Abraham Ortelius based on Giacomo Gastaldi’s information. This is the scarce 1581 variant French text edition, from the first state of the plate.

In this first state of the plate Neptune is depicted facing a female mermaid and the word ‘Servia‘ is printed at top right, (in the second state: Neptune is shown side by side with the mermaid and the word “Servia” has been removed.) This variant edition is identified by the cursive script on the verso, with the last line left aligned: “voir,qu’il lise ce que Leandre Albert en a escrit, qui en a fait une description tresdiligente.” and the small page number 58.

Beautifully decorated with an elaborate strap work title at top right and a scale at bottom right. The seas are richly embellished with a large cartouche of Neptune and mermaid and numerous ships and boats.

From Ortelius, A. Theatrum orbus terrarum, Antwerp.

Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598)

Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer, map seller and publisher. Ortelius was a leading cartographer who published the first modern atlas in 1570, Theatrum orbis terrarum in which each map was presented on a separate sheet. He initially trained as an engraver in 1547 and as an illuminator of maps. Influenced by Gerard Mercator he published his first map in 1564 and soon after published his famous atlas that changed the way maps were sold and published.
