Description:

Dramatic triptych woodblock signed Mosai Shungyo of the battle of Yingkou in the Sino-Japanese war (1894-95). The Battle of Yingkou (also known as the battle of Niuzhuang) was a land battle of the First Sino-Japanese War between the forces of Meiji Japan and Qing China, fought outside the treaty port town of Yingkou, Manchuria.   The artist Nagashima Shungyo also signed his prints Mosai Shungyo.

Nagashima (or Mosai) Shungyō (1870 - 1905)

Little is known about the life of Nagashima Shungyō. Chaikin and the Tahara Municipal Museum state he was the son of Utagawa Yoshitora (fl. c. 1836-1882). Chaikin also writes that he called himself Mōsai after 1874 and was also known as Utagawa Shungyō. Most of his known prints are of the Sino-Japanese War or kaika-e (prints of modernisation and Westernisation).
