Description:

Very rare lithograph from the original edition of The Illustrated Sydney News. The Illustrated Sydney News must have only started experimenting with the use of lithography for their illustrations (not including their occasional supplements) from about this time but probably due to the expense, soon after reverted back to the use of wood engraving. The essential difference between the two printing techniques, is that lithography provides the unique advantage that an artist can draw directly onto the stone rather than the alternative engraved process that was usually learned via a trade over a period of years. Very rare example of the use of black and white lithography in Colonial newspaper illustration.

Biography:

George Lacy (1817-1878)

Lacy arrived in Sydney in 1842 and spent much of his time travelling and sketching in New South Wales and the Victorian gold fields.
