Description:
Rare map of Australia, from an interesting, early 19th century Dutch atlas emphasising the important historical contribution made by the Dutch maritime exploration and charting, during the 16th and 17th century.
As Dutch names for early discoveries were increasingly disappearing from maps published by England and France, the two dominant maritime powers at the time, the Ultrecht provincial Society of Arts and Sciences offered a prize in 1821 for the best treatise to remedy this. The first prize was awarded in 1824 to the authors, naval captain R.G.Bennet and boarding school proprietor J.van Wijk, for their submission and accompanying atlas which documented Dutch explorers and their discoveries.
The atlas recorded the Dutch naming on charts focusing on the Arctic, New York State, South America, New Holland, Japan and the Pacific. Altogether one hundred and seven Dutch discoveries were documented on the accompanying charts.
