Depicting the actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV in the role of Gosho no Gorozo, under falling cherry blossom petals. From the Kabuki play, "Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura", the story of the conflict between two former samurai, one an otokodate. The "otokodate" were the equivalents of England’s, Robin Hood type of character said to have been common after the end of the samurai era. Sukeroku tells the story of the conflict between two former samurai, Gorozo and his enemy Hoshikage Doemon. From the series, Rien kyokaku den (Story of a Chivalrous Man in the Theatrical World).
Biography:
Kunisada Toyokuni III (1786 – 1864)
This is one of the signatures used by Kunisada from 1844 until he retired in 1845. During this time he produced many images using colours and styles that were extremely popular with general public and moving away from the more mellow styles.
