Description:
Rare and decorative Italian map of Tahiti by Cassini, based on the accounts of James Cook with stunning title cartouche at lower left.
Map of Tahiti named Otaheite.
Cook arrived at Otaheite on April 13, 1769 to measure the transit of Venus across the Sun’s sphere on June 3, an event which occurred only twice within 8 years and once every 120 years.
‘Monday 26th June. about three o’clock in the morning, I set out in the pinnance, accompanied by Mr. Banks, to make a circuit of the island, with a view to sketch out the coast and harbours.’ Cook. References: Hakluyt Society 1.118A ill. p.112
From, Cassini’s atlas, “Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale Delineato Sulle Ultime Osservation…”
Mapmaker:
Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-1824)
Cassini was a Rome based Italian globe maker, geographer, engraver, and
cartographer active in the later part of the 18th and early 19th
century. Not to be confused with the un-related well known French
cartographic family of the same name, Cassini is best known as a globe
maker and is considered the last of the great 18th century globe
makers.. Unlike many map and atlas publishers of the period, Cassini did
all of his own engraving work.
