Description:

Scarce map of the Holy Land shown at the time of the United Monarchy, the name given to the Israelite kingdom of Israel and Judah, during the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon, as written in the Hebrew Bible. The map is divided into the twelve tribes.

The large inset ‘Le Roiaume de Salomon’ shows the Kingdom of Salomon. There is a large and elaborate title cartouche. The map is from a French Bible published by Guillaume Despres. Pierre Moullart inherited the copper plates of his grandfather, Nicolas Sanson, and added the Sanson suffix to his name to publish maps

References: Laor 512.

Mapmaker:

Pierre Moullart (?-1730)

Moullart was Nicholas Sandon’s grandson who inherited the Sanson empire, and the position of Royal Cartographer, on his uncle’s death.
