Description:

Rare, large map by Vander AA, first published in 1713, with an elaborate title cartouche comprising a seated female native with a lion, snake and elephants, set in a landscape. Unlike many maps of the period Vander Aa, omits much of the ‘current’ speculation of inland Africa which was yet unknown. Pierre Vander AA, apprenticed at the age of 9, Vander AA had started as a book publisher by the age of 23. His publications include an ‘Atlas Nouveau‘ completed in about 1710, and the Galerie Agreable du Mond.

Pierre Vander Aa (1659 - 1733)

Apprenticed at the age of 9, Vander AA began his career at Lieden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. His publications include; Naaukeurige versamling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen 1706, Atlas Nouveau 1710, and Galerie Agreable du Mond.
