Scarce C18th folio sized engraving of a chili plant collected by the botanist on the La Perouse expedition.  

The chili pepper was introduced into Asia by the Portuguese aware of its trade value and resemblance to the spiciness of black pepper. It was introduced into India by them at the end of 15th century.
