Biography:
Louis Strimpl (1880-1937)
Born in Prague, Strimpl was a painter, graphic designer and Czech diplomat who made a career in Paris.
Strimpl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under the painter Vojtech Hynais. Around 1902, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the studio of Ludwig von Herterich and stayed there for two years. He the left for Paris lived near the boulevard Saint-Miche. He made illustrations for titles launched by the publisher Schwarz, including L’Assiette au beurre.
Strimpl also produced a series of drawings for The Happy Life and the Gazette du Bon Ton (1913-1914), including illustrations by Redfern. He exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts a series of pastels in 1909. He also works for Editions Calmann-Lévy as an illustrator. During the World War I, he joined the Czechoslovak Legions.
Strimpl then joined the Czech National Council formed in Paris on September 3, 1918, and was part of the delegation that met in Geneva on October 28-31, during which independence was proclaimed. Within the Council, Strimpl was more in charge of political service and communication. Between 1922 and 1927, he was Ambassador of Czechoslovakia in Brussels. He returned to Prague where he held the post of Chief of Protocol within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
