Description:
Rare etching of a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo by William Hayes who employed no fewer than seven of his children in printing and colouring the prints, for his series, Rare and Curious Birds. In producing these bird studies, Hayes first produced a lightly etched image which was then heavily coloured. In this way the resulting print resembled a watercolour, rather than the customary hand coloured prints of the times. Many of the prints were signed by the colourists.
Modern binomial name: Cacatua galerita
First described: Latham 1790
From William Hayes (1735-1802) Rare and Curious Birds.
William Hayes (1735 - 1802)
